I always love contact with guests (past or future), asking for more information about the history of the cottage or Shaftesbury.
This week I was searching for the origins of ‘Gold’ Hill and although there doesn’t seem to be a definite answer, it may be derived from a Guild (or Gild) Hall having stood on or at the top of the hill since medieval times.
One google result was Open Plaques which is a project documenting historic plaques throughout the country. That for Gold Hill says that tenants of all the cottages on the hill, have a right to keep sheep and the right exists to this day!
The painting depicts sheep penned in the Gold Hill Market to illustrate this.
