“Unbelievably Beautiful! Wow!!”
5 of 5 starsReviewed 2 days ago for a stay in December 2014 NEW
Updown Cottage is way more than 5*. I would give it a 20 out of 10! It is so beautiful and historic and everything is so first class. Jane was so helpful before and after we arrived and really added so much to our experience. The cottage had absolutely everything that we needed. We had two families together in the house and had been worried about space but it was perfect. We especially loved the huge dining room table overlooking the Blackmore Vale. What a great place to eat and play games as well as to sit and look at the view. My husband and I stayed on the top floor and loved the privacy of this suite. What a view from the window and the room was spacious and the bath beautiful. We really loved staying on such a beautiful street. People were out photographing the street every day and it was fun to know that they were taking pictures of where we were lucky enough to stay. We had been worried about the steep hill but it was absolutely no problem at all. We ate at the Grovesnor Hotel restaurant (wonderful, wonderful!), Ye Two Brewers (great, great!) and Amore' (very good). We loved the village and spent a whole day sightseeing and shopping. Loved the convenience of the grocery stores as well. All in all it was absolutely the BEST way to end our trip. We stayed in England for 5 1/2 weeks and this was the BEST place we stayed. We would love to go back again and highly recommend this property.

Wonderfully comfortable with a real spirit of generosity.

My husband and I have stayed in a Design hotel for our anniversary and a handful of boutique hotels across the country and we both agreed that the standard and quality of Updown Cottage was far superior!

The house has been our base for a week where the focal point has been our daughter's wedding at Larmer Tree Gardens. We could not have dared hope that an entirely strange house could have been so ideal for the purpose. We have been able to entertain here on a non-holiday scale and have found great comfort and solace at inevitable moments of stress. Everything really works and everything and more is all there. Beautifully welcoming and divinely comfortable, we have nothing but praise for this inspirational place.

We don't really want to go home......the cottage is beautiful - restored with such love and inspiration - and so fully equipped. The views an endless joy.

Absolutely lovely cottage, one of the highlights of my UK trip, almost felt like a shame to go out sightseeing and leave the house. Fully set up (i.e. all the kitchenware is very high quality, amazing renovation, lovely heater and best oven/stove I've used). Just check out the website.

The cottage is spectacular. Absolutely beautifully appointed and renovated to be modern while maintaining the ancient character. (Be careful of the incredibly low passageways is you are tall)! A great deal of room spread across four full floors with a wonderful master suite up top. The Dorset countryside is beautiful. Jane is the most friendly, professional, and helpful host I have encountered anywhere. And the fun of staying on a very famous street ... just be ready for tourist cameras pointed at your window from outside occasionally. Highly recommended as a launch point for all that Dorset holds - a five-star home away from home.

Just a short text to thank you again for what my wife described as a perfect week and I must concur Hope all was left to your satisfaction Cannot wait until we return Thanks again.
As everything you do is so special the speed of deposit return comes as no surprise. Please use any of our comments to promote your beautiful home and it did feel just like home!

It really is a delightful place, a real home from home, with all mod cons but retaining that olde-worlde atmosphere. The location could not be better, we never tired of the views and were able to enjoy the late afternoon sun in the garden. - we walked up, we walked down - we ate at all the recommended local eateries and some further afield. Two wet days out of seven gave us the opportunity to light a log fire - who'd have thought it was July?
All in all a week of happy memories, wish we were there now!

Thank you so much. We talked about your cottage to just about everyone we met during our trip. We really loved the place.
You have done a tremendous job at providing every conceivable modern convenience and yet maintaining the old-world charm of the place.
I hope we get the chance to visit again.

Just to let you know that we arrived at Updown and that we're as happy and enchanted with the cottage and your wonderful taste as the first time we came to Shaftesbury.
We had a lovely time and will be back next year or earlier! Thanks for everything 🙂 We really love Updown and your personal touch to everything related to the cottage.

We had a truly super time, thank you. Such a special place: thank you so much for sharing it with us!
Looking forward to the next stay.

We just left the cottage. We really want to thank you for your kindness and for our wonderful stay.
We hope to return soon.
I'm home now, in Italy. We already miss your cottage!

We booked Updown cottage in early April, 2016. The cottage was exactly as shown in the pictures and was very well updated with the latest amenities. The kitchen was well appointed and the bathrooms were fantastic. The location was central to where we wanted to visit. Each evening it just felt like "home" to us. When you visit, The Mitre (walk up from the cottage) and Ye Olde Two Brewers (walk down) were both great pubs nearby. We plan to revisit someday!

My family and I have just returned from a weeks stay in Updown Cottage. What a gorgeous place it is! It is worthy of its 5 stars as we could not fault it in any way. From booking to arriving Jane was very helpful answering any questions we had promptly. The cottage has been finished to a very high standard and anything we could have asked for and more was made available to us. The views from the music room were stunning and we were lucky enough to get some lovely weather so spent a lot of time sitting in the secluded and very private garden. The cottage is situated just yards away from the bustling town centre but you would never believe you were in a town as it was so peaceful. All you can really hear is sheep bleating in the distance. The welcome basket we received was just right and included the essentials to get us going. I would recommend this cottage to anyone! If you're looking for a luxurious cottage with all mod cons this is for you!!
